Ontario Energy Market FAQ

What is Global Adjustment and why does it matter so much in Ontario?
Global Adjustment (GA) is a charge on your electricity bill that funds Ontario’s contracted generation capacity and conservation programs. For large industrial and commercial consumers, it can account for 60–70% of your total electricity cost. The ICI program lets Class A consumers reduce their GA share by cutting consumption during the province’s top 5 peak hours of the year — that’s where pTrack® pays for itself many times over.
What is the ICI program and who qualifies?
The Industrial Conservation Initiative (ICI) is an IESO program that lets Class A consumers (typically facilities using 1 MW or more) reduce their Global Adjustment charges based on how much they curtail during the 5 highest-demand hours of the year. Qualification thresholds and program rules change periodically — contact us and we’ll confirm your eligibility and walk you through the savings potential.
Why does Ontario's energy market need specialized tools?
Ontario runs a regulated market with layered charges — GA, distribution charges, transmission charges, RPP rates, and more. Managing costs effectively requires understanding not just how much energy you’re using, but when, relative to grid peaks, program windows, and rate structures. Generic energy tools aren’t built for that complexity. Ours are.
How does pTrack® predict ICI peaks?
pTrack® uses AI algorithms trained on Ontario grid data, weather forecasts, HOEP pricing, and historical peak patterns to generate daily and 12-day outlooks. You receive a Sunday forecast each week, a Day-Before Standby Notice at least 18 hours ahead, a Day-Of Standby Notice at least 6 hours ahead, and a Curtailment Notice at least 4 hours before a potential peak — with alerts via SMS, email, and phone.
What is Demand Response in Ontario and how much can we earn?
Ontario’s IESO Demand Response program pays commercial and industrial facilities to be available to reduce their load during periods of grid stress. Participants receive availability payments just for being enrolled and energy payments when called upon to curtail. Earnings can reach approximately $198,000 per MW. As a licensed IESO Aggregator, Edgecom Energy manages your enrollment, compliance, and dispatch notifications.
What types of assets does NeuraCharge™ support?
NeuraCharge™ supports batteries (BESS/UPS/PCS), natural gas generators, solar PV, and dispatchable loads including HVAC, boilers, refrigeration, cold storage, and compressed air systems. It scales seamlessly as your DER portfolio grows.
What is the NeuraCharge™ NOC?
NeuraCharge™’s Network Operations Center is a Toronto-based, 24/7 control room staffed by energy professionals who monitor your DER assets in real time, handle automated market dispatch, respond to alarms, and coordinate with equipment vendors when issues arise. It’s like having a dedicated operations team — without the overhead.
How quickly can we get started?
Most clients are fully onboarded within 4–8 weeks, including hardware installation, platform setup, and integration with IESO systems. Our IoT sensors are plug-and-play, and we handle the heavy lifting so it doesn’t disrupt your day-to-day operations.
Can your platform help with emissions reporting?
Yes. dataTrack™ tracks Scope 2 emissions from electricity consumption at the asset and production-line level. You can monitor CO₂ intensity per unit produced, run emissions reports, and demonstrate progress toward decarbonization targets — which is increasingly relevant for corporate sustainability commitments and regulatory requirements in Ontario.
Do you integrate with existing SCADA, BMS, or utility billing systems?
Yes. dataTrack™ and NeuraCharge™ both support API and SCADA integration, and bills are automatically imported into the platform — no manual uploading needed. NeuraCharge™ also complies with IEEE 1547 for secure utility connection and integrates with EMS, BMS, and MPC platforms.
