How Demand Response Works

Demand Response operates by having participants reduce their energy consumption during periods of grid stress. This can be achieved through Traditional Demand Response or Automated Demand Response.

TDR

Traditional Demand Response (TDR)

Traditional Demand Response involves receiving curtailment notices, determining what can be curtailed, and then manually curtailing.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Got questions about Demand Response? Here are some common Q&As.

What is Demand Response?

Demand Response is an energy management program used by utilities to balance the demand and supply of the grid. It works by providing large energy consumers with financial incentives to reduce or shift their energy consumption during peak demand periods.

What is a Demand Response Aggregator?

A demand response aggregator acts as an intermediary between the IESO and energy consumers, managing the participation of multiple consumers. By pooling together many electricity consumers, the aggregator enables even smaller facilities to participate in demand response programs.

Can I participate without a Demand Response Aggregator?
Yes, you can participate independently. However, there are many advantages to partnering with an aggregator:
  • Risk Management: The aggregator assumes the risks and financial penalties.
  • Administrative Support: The aggregator handles all the paperwork.
  • Bidding Management: The aggregator manages daily and seasonal bidding.
  • Energy Monitoring: The aggregator may provide energy monitoring solutions.
  • Curtailment Planning: The aggregator assists with curtailment planning.
  • No Curtailment Minimums: There are no minimum requirements for curtailment.

Most participants join through an aggregator. Typically, only organizations with extremely large capacities and dedicated staff choose to participate independently.
What are the benefits of participating in Demand Response?

By participating in the Demand Response program, you get an additional revenue stream that gets paid out twice a year. In addition, you’ll also be supporting the stability of the grid.

How much can I get from Demand Response?

The Demand Response payment can vary year to year and is different between the summer and winter seasons. For 2024, this amount is roughly $71,000/MW/Year. The demand response aggregator usually takes a small percentage of this payment for their services. For a better estimate, check out our DR Calculator below.

Edgecom Energy offers a comprehensive Energy Bundle that includes 100% DR payments, dataTrack™, pTrack®, AI Energy CoPilot, and more.

I'm already in the ICI program, can I join Demand Response as well?

Absolutely! In fact, many of our customers participate in both programs. If you’re already a part of the ICI program, that means you already have the ability to curtail your operations, so joining the DR program is an easy way to boost revenue.

Am I Eligible for the Demand Response Program?

If you are participating with an aggregator like Edgecom Energy there’s no minimum curtailment required. If you’re joining on your own, you’ll need at least 1 MW of curtailment capacity.

How do I participate in Demand Response?

The easiest way to participate in the demand response program is with an aggregator like Edgecom Energy. Reach out to us and we’ll handle the rest.

Whats the difference between the ICI program and the Demand Response program?
Both the ICI and DR programs are grid management initiatives. The main differences between them are:
  • Eligibility: The ICI program requires you to be a Class A customer (averaging over 500 kW of monthly peak demand). Whereas there are no minimum requirements if you participate with a DR aggregator.
  • Voluntary Participation: The ICI program is voluntary—you choose whether or not to curtail during a peak event. In contrast, the Demand Response curtailment is mandatory once you join the DR program. Failure to curtail during an activation can result in removal from the DR program.
