Challenge

Hydro Rein acquired a facility in North York, Ontario, that was already equipped with a Tesla battery system. Due to its large energy footprint, the site faced significant Global Adjustment (GA) charges, around $366,000 per year. To reduce costs and take advantage of grid programs such as the Industrial Conservation Initiative (ICI), Hydro Rein’s head office in Oslo, Norway, provided instructions for the North York team to manually dispatch the battery.

However, this manual process required considerable internal effort and limited the team’s capacity to explore other energy-saving opportunities. Precise timing was also critical to avoid any impact on production, making the approach both complex and resource-intensive to manage in-house.

Solution

Hydro Rein implemented Edgecom Energy’s NeuraCharge™ solution, an AI-powered, vertically integrated Energy Management System (EMS) that optimizes and controls Distributed Energy Resources (DERs) and battery systems. NeuraCharge™ enables asset owners to monitor, manage, and automate their energy assets, simplifying participation in grid programs such as the ICI, Demand Response, and Energy Arbitrage.

For a fully hands-off experience, Hydro Rein opted to have its battery managed through Edgecom Energy’s NOC. Through the NOC, Edgecom Energy remotely controlled all battery operations, minimizing unnecessary activations and ensuring dispatches were aligned with financial goals and site constraints. Real-time monitoring provided Hydro Rein with confidence that battery operations would not interfere with production.

Results

Hydro Rein gained access to more revenue-generating programs while reducing internal workload. The team no longer had to manage GA manually, and the risk of interrupting operations was eliminated through Edgecom’s monitoring and control. With Neuracharge™ in place, Hydro Rein turned its BESS from a resource drain into a high-performing asset.
