How Battery Storage Cut $126K in Global Adjustment Charges at Hydro Rein

Challenge

Hydro Rein acquired a facility in North York, Ontario, that was already equipped with a Tesla battery system. Due to its large energy footprint, the site faced significant Global Adjustment (GA) charges, around $366,000 per year. To reduce costs and benefit from grid programs like the Industrial Conservation Initiative (ICI), Hydro Rein’s head office in Oslo, Norway, told the North York team to manually dispatch the battery.

This manual process took a lot of internal effort and limited the team’s ability to explore other energy-saving opportunities. Precise timing was also critical to avoid any impact on production, making the approach both complex and resource-intensive to manage in-house.

Solution

Hydro Rein implemented Edgecom Energy’s NeuraCharge™ solution, an AI-powered, vertically integrated Energy Management System (EMS) that optimizes and controls Distributed Energy Resources (DERs) and battery systems.
